Not only is the Graduate Center one of the city's most distinguished intellectual institutions, home to thousands of advanced students and renowned faculty, it also opens its doors to the public, with performances in its concert hall and conferences, lectures, and symposia on a wide range of current topics and events. The building alone is worth a visit: formerly the site of B. Altman and Company, this 1906 Renaissance Revival landmark is a wonderful example of the architecture of early-20th-century New York.
